Canstruction® is using one can of food as a catalyst for change. One Can® to represent the building blocks of massive sculptures. One Can® to prove that every act of kindness makes a difference. Since 1992, Canstruction® has contributed over 17.5 million pounds of food to community food banks demonstrating that we can win the fight against hunger.
Canstruction® combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed the hungry. Competing teams, lead by architects and engineers, showcase their talents by designing giant sculptures made entirely out of canned food. Structures are created by stacking a variety of can sizes and shapes using the product labels as the color palette. Structurally self-supporting, the only other materials to be used are 1/4” leveling, cardboard, tape, rubber bands and wire.
Information on the 2016 competitions can be found here. Get involved and help feed the hungry by starting a team, joining a team, sponsoring the event, or simply stopping by to view the structures.
The Governor of Iowa, Terry Brandstad has declared April as Iowa Architecture Month and recognizes the dedication and important of great design and architecture in the state of Iowa.

The general public's view of architects and AIA Iowa is shaped first and foremost by how the individual AIA members interact with their clients and their communities. The AIA Iowa Public Relations Committee introduced this program in 2008 to recognize members who represent AIA's values to their communities through public service. This program is a recognition program bestowed upon all members who meet qualification criteria, and is intended to encourage all AIA Iowa members to actively engage in their communities and share in the AIA mission. Learn more about the program and submit an application or nominate someone here.
Each member enrolled in the program is recognized at the AIA Iowa Annual Convention and in their local newspaper. We encourage all AIA Iowa Architects who serve their communities to participate. Congratulations to the 2016 Citizen Architect Program Participants!
